A Hard Look at the Current State of the Wood Pellet Industry

As a company in the business of selling wood pellets year round – we are always watching supply/demand fluctuations through the seasons. While it’s scary to think of another wood pellet shortage, it’s impossible to ignore the increasingly tight supply of pellets at the moment.

While demand continued to rise through the 2018-19′ heating season due to increased pellet stove sales and high oil prices, the supply took some serious hits leaving the pellet market in a delicate, vulnerable state.

Aside from the fairly recent series of catastrophic mill fires that crippled production, inventory building has been seriously hindered by weather. Last year’s winter stretched far into spring, which depleted much of the inventory normally built up over the summer. Plus, the extremely wet fall months and bitterly cold November led to historically low levels of raw material and finished product.

While we want to avoid causing a panic – we also want to be honest with our customers about what we’re seeing. For those who remember the winter of 2014, pellet shortages can occur very quickly and without much warning. However, right now the warning signs are glaring. For example, most mills currently have about 20 percent of the inventory as they had last year at this time – and even last year was tight.

In order to stay shortage-proof and avoid inevitable price increases, we strongly recommend you secure your pellet fuel for the next heating season now if you’re able…or at least well in advance.

Look How This Woodpellets.com Customer Reuses Wood Pallets

If you’ve received a pellet fuel delivery, you may have wondered what you could do with the leftover wood pallets. Stephen B. of Massachusetts (a Woodpellets.com customer) showed us a few of his pallet projects:

Pooch Assistance

“The first is a doggie tunnel I made to give clear passage for the dog in the winter. The outside has plastic sheeting from a pellet shipment. Skye is our dog. When the weather is poor the tunnel helps her to get out of the doggie door.”

Treehouse Hangout

“Here you see the pallet frame with the roof and porch framed. In the next photo I have the metal roof up and I’m getting ready for the siding. I used lots of other repurposed materials: old staircase from play system, telephone poles for supports, cedar fence panels, old doors.”

Clearly this structure is a large scale project. Stephen explains, “Been chipping away at the treehouse for a few seasons now. Free time is not too abundant.”

DIY Wood Pallet Bottle OpenerHe also somehow found the time to create this handy bottle opener to hang on the wall. As if we weren’t already impressed, he tells there’s a pellet bin project in the works too. Stay tuned for an update on that!

The 5 Essential Tools for a Proper Wood Pellet Cleaning

Stop Wasting Time with Poor Stove Cleaning!

Do you hate cleaning your pellet stove? I do. It’s one of those necessary chores of pellet stove ownership that you come to dread. But over the last four years that I have been cleaning my stove, I have managed to reduce the time spent to just 20-30 minutes per month. I have found that the most critical step in cleaning your stove is having the right tools for the job.

1. Although it may seem obvious – a flashlight that you can wear on your head, or clamp to the side of the stove, is a must. Without the proper light, it is impossible to see all nooks and crannies where the ash is hiding. While the headlight allows you to use your hands for other tasks, it throws decent light wherever you turn your head to look.

2. Another must-have tool is a good stiff brush. I use an old nylon 2′ paint brush to sweep the ash from my heat exchanger, and off the walls of the stove itself. Don’t try to use a cheap flimsy brush. You need a sturdy one that can withstand the stress of regular cleaning.

Benefits of Wood Pellet Heating

In addition to the long term cost advantage over heating oil and propane, wood pellets have some additional benefits that you may be unaware of.

CO2 Cycle with Fossil Fuel Burning1. The carbon footprint of wood pellets can be neutral, or close to it. A study by The Alliance for Green Heat and VU University Amsterdam revealed that heating with wood pellets can emit about one tenth the carbon as heating with oil. If the forests where the wood pellet raw material has been taken from are sustainably managed, the overall carbon footprint is drastically reduced in comparison with fossil fuel heat.
