The Douglas Fir Pellet Difference

When it comes to 100% Douglas fir wood pellets, the popularity is—pardon the pun—catching like wildfire.

Now you may ask, “Aren’t all pellets the same?”

Nope.

Then, you may ask, “What’s the big deal with Douglas fir pellets?”

We’re so glad you asked.

Douglas fir wood fibers are one of the hottest burning wood species in North America, as evidenced in the chart below. BTUs are British Thermal Units, and they measure energy output. A higher BTU rating equates to more heat output, and Douglas fir tops the list.

There are fewer minerals in this kind of wood, especially for the old growth Douglas fir trees. Fewer minerals equates to low ash levels and can mean up to two to three times less ash than the average premium-grade pellet. Enjoy less time spent cleaning your stove and more time curled up inside a warm house doing what you love.

So why doesn’t everyone use Douglas fir pellets? Douglas fir trees grow in the Pacific Northwest, so transportation costs are high to deliver pellets to the Northeast, making it more difficult for retailers to offer them in the eastern portion of the U.S. When they are offered, the price tag is often higher than other options due to this transportation cost. But remember that these high-quality softwood pellets last much longer than the average hardwood pellet. This makes the purchase more economical—and preferable—for many of our customers.

If you decide you want to go the Douglas fir route, consider pairing the premium pellets with a high-quality stove. Such stoves can adjust their feed rate based on room temperature, maintaining a constant temperature and reducing pellet usage accordingly.

Also, beware of pellets that are Douglas fir “blends,” as such pellets often contain a minimal amount of Douglas fir. There is a huge difference between a 100% Douglas fir pellet and a blend. Our Douglas fir pellets are made with 100% Douglas fir, so you don’t have to worry about getting other wood species in your fuel.

How to Prepare Your Pellet Stove for Fall

Fall is approaching, and now is the perfect time to get your wood pellet stove ready to heat your home for the winter!

Fall maintenance for your wood pellet stove is much easier if you were properly prepared in the spring. When the temps start to warm up outside, it’s a great time to clean out residue, leftover pellets and moisture. If you’re sheepishly considering what you didn’t do to get your stove ready, fear not. There’s still time.

To prepare your stove, you can plan a cleaning session by a certified technician before the heating season begins. A tech can check all stove parts and adjust or replace those that are worn or not working properly, maximizing your stove’s efficiency.

Aside from the standard ash removal and general maintenance, your wood pellet stove needs additional care for safety, preparedness and efficiency. Pellet stoves use pressurized air drawn from an exhaust, so your exhaust naturally sucks in pet hair, dander, dust, lint and other particles in your home. Ensure proper air circulation by cleaning out all passages, along with clearing out the exhaust.

Below is a checklist of what you should include for a thorough cleaning. And make sure to check out this article for more about the tools needed to clean your stove properly.

  • Check unit for visible defects, ash and discoloration
  • Vacuum inside the unit
  • Remove baffles, clean and reinstall
  • Clean and inspect heat exchanger
  • Remove access doors and panels, vacuum and reinstall
  • Clean and inspect:
    • Heat exchanger
    • Burn pot
    • Ignitor
    • Ash pan
    • Convection fan
    • Glass
    • Combustion fan
    • Pressure switch/hose
    • Venting pipe
  • Also inspect the following:
    • Gaskets
    • Electrical wiring
    • Auger motor*
    • Venting seals
  • Inspect hopper for pellet quality and excess fines
  • Vacuum back of stove
  • Check and lubricate shaker grate cam*

*These parts are not applicable on all stove models.

By following these steps, you can ensure your wood pellet stove is ready to keep your home warm and cozy throughout the winter season. Regular maintenance not only improves efficiency but also extends the life of your stove. Take the time to prepare now, and you’ll enjoy reliable and efficient heating all season long.

Is a Garage Delivery of Wood Pellets Right for Me?

Thinking about a garage delivery this year for your fuel?

Woodpellets.com has a premier service that includes garage delivery of your order by one of our professional drivers using a special pallet jack. A pallet jack is a hand-operated machine that lifts heavy pallets. Because of their maneuverability and small size, pallet jacks offer greater flexibility than forklifts to place pallets in the best location for you. For this type of delivery, we still bring the forklift to get the pallets off our truck and then the pallet jack finishes the job by putting your fuel in the garage.

Garage Delivery

Garage delivery costs an additional $65 due to the extra time and special equipment it requires. A delivery coordinator will contact you at least one day in advance to find a mutually convenient delivery time.

If you’re interested in this option, keep in mind that your garage floor must be flat and smooth concrete to accommodate the pallet jack as it has very small hard wheels and cannot drive over any cracks, holes or unpaved areas.  If there are any lips or slopes from your driveway into your garage, the pallet jack will not work as it can only drive on flat, paved surfaces.  Also, the delivery driver must have a clean and clear, unobstructed access to the garage space where the pellets will be stored.

To see if a pallet jack delivery is an option in your area, call 1-800-PELLETS or visit Woodpellets.com for a free quote!

Best Practices for Storing Wood Pellets Inside or Outside

Whether you store your pellets inside or out, it’s always important to inspect your fuel when it arrives. We have a quality guarantee and process and treat your pellets with care along the entire journey.  If your pellets arrive damaged, call us right away at 1-800-PELLETS.

Storing Wood Pellets Inside

If at all possible, we always recommend storing your fuel inside. Choose a dry area free from flooding, mold, and excessive humidity. If you have the space, reuse the wooden pallet your fuel arrived on. Place it in a dry area, put cardboard over the pallet, and stack your bags on top. The pallet is strong and can handle the weight pellets stacked high. Check out this article on how to safely stack pellets in your small garage.

If your space can’t accommodate the 40” x 48” pallet your fuel arrived on, you can also stack in a narrow space, as pictured here. Re-stacking your pellets in your preferred space takes a little extra time and work, but it’s a great way to save space and make sure your pellets are in a location that works best for you.

Storing Pellets Outside

Storing Wood Pellets Outside

It’s not always possible to store your wood pellets inside. If your garage or basement can’t accommodate your pellets, a shed or shelter is the next best option, particularly in a raised, dry place.

However, outside storage works, too! By taking a few extra steps, your pellets will be protected until you need them.

As we mention above, inspect your fuel when it arrives. Your pellets will be carefully wrapped in a protective plastic shroud before delivery. If there are any rips or holes in the plastic shrouding – and this can happen during transport – repair them with waterproof tape or additional layers of plastic.

Choose your storage location. Do not store your pellets in an area subject to water pooling or flooding, which can cause your pellets to get wet and turn to sawdust. Also look for irrigation heads and spray paths that could damage your pellets, and avoid storing near heat sources, as this can cause the pellets to self-ignite.

Securely fasten a right-sized tarp* over your fuel. This will protect it from water damage and deter birds, small animals or snakes that may try to puncture the plastic and nest in your fuel. Fill milk jugs with sand or water and tie to the edges of the tarp to prevent it from dislodging. You can also use tent stakes or large rocks to secure the tarp.

Recommended Tarp Size based on # of Bags

# of bagsHeight of bags*Tarp size (recommended)
1-ton pallet504’ 14’ x 14’
1.5-ton pallet756’18’ x 18’

Are you feeling handy? You can also make your own tarp out of empty wood pellet bags! Check out this article on how to DIY a water blob and make a square or rectangle instead of a pouch. Also, check out this simple trick that helps prevent liquid from pooling on the top of your pellet pile!

Check on your pellets periodically. Even under a secure tarp, small animals can be persistent. Ensure a clever critter hasn’t started a home in your fuel pile!

If you’re storing your fuel outside during the heating season, too, keep using the tarp and the shroud. When you need a new bag of pellets, remove the protective wrap, and carefully slice the shroud on the top edge of the pallet to slip the top bags out. Secure the shroud after to protect the remaining bags and cover again with the tarp.

When the snow flies, shovel a path to your fuel and shovel around the entire pallet to keep snow off your fuel and prevent any water or ice damage. Continue to use the shroud and tarp to protect your fuel from snow and ice, and continue to check on it periodically, too.

As mentioned above, all of our Quality Certified fuels are backed by guarantee. If your pellets arrive damaged, call us right away at 1-800-PELLETS. It’s vitally important to note that all physical quality claims must be made within 30 days of delivery and why you need to closely inspect them as soon as they arrive!  You can also call anytime with general questions. We’re happy to assist!

Wet, White, and Wild Weather According to the Farmers’ Almanac 2024 – 25 Weather Forecast

According to the new Farmers’ Almanac Extended Winter Forecast, a cold, wet, windy winter is ahead for most locations across the country. A La Nina effect is likely to develop and hold on through the winter season as it cools the ocean’s surface in the central and eastern Pacific.

The experts at Farmers’ Almanac are warning us to brace for a “wet winter whirlwind,” and we know our wood pellets are one surefire solution to woeful weather.

The coldest seasonal temps are likely at the end of January into early February thanks to the effects of frigid Arctic air, particularly in the Northern Plains. The cold air will also bring heavy, windy snow showers to the Great Lakes and areas to their east.

For our wood pellet stove proponents in the New England area and in the northeast, you’re looking at frequent storms, above-average winter precipitation, and temps that fluctuate between normal and above-average. Mountainous areas will see the most snow, so get your skis and boards ready, as well as ensuring you’ve got an ample supply of wood pellets to warm up after! Coastal areas will see sleet and rain, especially along the I-95 corridor.

Farmers Almanac forecasters have also red-flagged the end January for the entire eastern half of the US, because of “a very active storm track that we expect will deliver frequent bouts of heavy precipitation, as well as strong and gusty winds. We would especially highlight the time frames from January 20 to 23 and 24 to 27, which could mean copious amounts of snow, rain, sleet, and ice (depending on where you live).”

Yikes! To secure your wood pellet fuel now for free driveway delivery in the month of your choice with only a $100 deposit, visit Woodpellets.com or call 1-800-PELLETS to speak to an expert today!

We don’t offer pumpkin spice wood pellets, but may we suggest a pumpkin spice candle in a safe-to-light spot in your home?
